Fans are more aware of how all the players are doing and there are statistics and advanced metrics to inform them. I doubt most players look at that stuff.
The main problem with the fan voting is homerism and that should be addressed somehow. Actually, i'd blow up the whole system and let a panel of 5 writers/bloggers from each city vote with the stipulation that they can't vote for players on the team they cover.

I just don't buy that he's the best defensive OF in the AL. When is the last time he made a catch to rob a HR or threw someone out at home or 3rd?

Trust me when I say, and it should be pretty evident, I'm not a Julio defender by any margin.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 4:40 amI just don't buy that he's the best defensive OF in the AL. When is the last time he made a catch to rob a HR or threw someone out at home or 3rd?
But he's top 3% in range in baseball. His ability to cover space in CF is truly better than anyone else.
And while it wouldn't have been a homer, he made a catch yesterday in the first inning to rob McCutchen of a clear double jumping and crashing into the wall. That play set up Castillo for a lot of success the rest of the game and had to deflate a Pirates lineup that was shut out a game prior.

I remember a few games ago, Julio totally misread a ball, or lost it in the sun - one he normally would have caught. The one where he climbed up the wall and it ended up bouncing off the wall 10 feet away. I thought, wtf Julio, how did you not get to that?Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 4:49 amTrust me when I say, and it should be pretty evident, I'm not a Julio defender by any margin.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 4:40 amI just don't buy that he's the best defensive OF in the AL. Then, when the Mariners were batting, Luke Raley hit a double to almost the exact same place, seemed to be hit just as hard... But the outfielders weren't anywhere near it. There was no chance anyone was catching it.
And I was no longer thinking Julio effed up so bad, he just lost the ball sprinting toward a possibly amazing play that none of us would have thought was amazing, because it would have just looked like a routine warning-track catch for Julio Rodriguez.

Not to mention the recent Cub series where their outfielders looked like The Three Stooges while Julio easily caught everything hit his way.Millikin wrote: ↑Mon Jul 07, 2025 7:06 amI remember a few games ago, Julio totally misread a ball, or lost it in the sun - one he normally would have caught.
