I think this is directionally the right way to go, though I think $100,000 per year is a bit extreme. I also think they should probably phase this in over several years. But in terms of incentives, this sort of policy is on the right track.

Something I definitely applaud and agree with.

Tech companies need to hire American kids out of college and develop them toward long careers.

The H1B visa was nothing but a scheme to make foreign labor work 80 hour weeks for less salary than they'd pay an American worker to work 40. It was nothing more than a scheme to not have to pay people to advance in their careers.

This population of workers was no more capable than any American worker you're going to hire with an engineering degree, computer science degree, what have you.

Yes! Yes!

I think people (and by this I mean politicians who deal with things like these work visas) need to realize that individuals skills are dynamic, not static. Yea, of course you need a base level of a solid education as a foundation, but someone who is 10 years into a tech career has learned a lot of what he or she knows through experience. When you cut out an American kid of that opportunity to hire a non-American kid (and it really doesn't matter whether money is the employer's reason), you are dis-investing in Americans.

I don't know if it's the right number either, but if an employer wants to be able to hire the best and brightest, from wherever in the world they come from (this is Elon Musk's argument), go ahead and do it - but it has to be worth it to the employer, and not at the expense of a lifetime career opportunity for an American.

(P.S. I hope this sticks, but I would not be surprised to see some changes in the policy, maybe really soon.)
