I don't know why Geno would be a problem for the roster, unless it was a multi year deal... which might be where they're apart.

Just throwing some cash at him on a one year deal to hope he comes in and does better than Ben Williamson seems like a decent bet though.

Better than Ben Williamson seems like a pretty low bar..

It's not like they're going to spend the money they'd be paying Geno on anybody else. We can probably all agree on that.

I'd take him, just because of the low bar.

And either way, it's Dipoto's fault for letting it come to this.
It sounds like they are looking to add someone with better contact numbers than Geno. I know Seattle has had Steven Kwan talks, but the return value might be too rich for the Mariners. Donovan or Horner make the most sense.

My fear with Geno is that he reverts back to this .200-.220ish strikeout guy that is streaky as all get out. He's not the worst idea, but you've got a bunch of young kids that need to get AB's in the majors, with Donovan and Horner, they play multiple positions, so easier to get these kids work in. If you can develop them, its cheaper than going out into free agency.

Buster Olney just comped Colt Emerson to Brice Turang. I'd take that all day long. Took him a year or two to figure things out though. They have all the ammo they need to make a trade before Spring Training and at the deadline to get another bat. But they really need 2 more bats to be honest.

Does Jerry consider Eugenio as that big bat.

I will praise Jerry’s name when he signs someone worth bragging about
Yeah I hope not. Not to say that I don't love Geno, or appreciate him, but his strikeout numbers in Seattle blue just kill me.
It is his .255 OBP as a Mariner and his 479 OPS at T Mobile last season that are the concern. Ks have almost no correlation to scoring runs so we shouldn't obsess about them just because Jerry told us to so that he could justify trading him for a salary dump after the 2023 season.

He said this in terms of re-signing Geno the other day. I'd say that's pretty accurate as well as indicating it's unlikely to happen
He fits emotionally ... but that could be problematic in continuing to build our roster,"
Pretty crazy retraction since they said the wanted him back just one short month ago.

I guess if Suarez is willing to take a one year contract. That's what it would turn on isn't it. Interesting how his value seems to be cratering generally after a 49 home run season

Yep probably. Arraez just took a 1 year deal for $12M after his 1 WAR season. Geno put of 3+ WAR but is a lot older and might have cost himself close to $100M with his performance after he was traded.

Cards report to camp on Feb. 12th so if he doesn't get traded by then, he won't be a Mariner. until maybe July.

Yeah, 11 days from now. I'm sure that preliminary talks have been had. Injuries like Logan Evans have already happened and the M's want to see whose going yo make it yo camp before they make a deal
