In the previous 10 seasons, the Mariners has the second-worst cumulative regular-season record in baseball, ahead of only the Houston Astros:

I didn't use the word credit, that was bpj. The question mark means I was disagreeing. It's not about credit or hoping, it's not about what dipoto has to say, it's simply studying the analytics. That's what I'm saying, it will be interesting if the analytics hold up. Again, I think the Dbacks were as interested in the analytics as the mariners

Last season Young was somewhat disappointing, and that was after not showing a great deal of power in the minors.

He posted a .607 OPS (81 wRC+) in 257 plate appearances. His playing time evaporated as the season got late and outcomes mattered more. He didn’t play in the postseason

But there was that. A single event in a mediocre season.

Young hit a middle-middle fastball from Kumar Rocker 456 feet into the second deck at T-Mobile Park. It was the longest home run hit at T-Mobile Park in 2025 and one of the 10 longest in Seattle in the Statcast Era.

Young hit the ball 114.1 mph, which places him in the top 10% by max velocity. That’s crucial. As Davy Andrews pointed out for Fangraphs (in a post about a young Victor Robles), rookie max exit velocity is one of the strongest predictors of future performance
