The Mariners Mid-Season Master Plan

Its kind of a shame that the division is so horrible this year. The M's suck and probably aren't going deep in the playoffs. We need some actual legitimate hitting prospects on this team. We have some highly rated guys but they are all 170 pound middle infielders. We need to find the next Nick Kurtz to supplement that. The logical thing to do would be to trade Randy for a haul while he is hot and trade Gilbert as well. Can't really justify doing that when you are in first place though.

I thought Laz was going to be that guy but alas in year two in AA he is only hitting .221 with a 30% K rate. Walks and Power there but a .221 BA in AA doesn't translate well. Julio hit .362 in Ark.

Why not both? If you trade off Kirby for Yordan you will need someone to replace him.

Either one of these moves would be too bold for the Mariners - so if they orchestrated both, I’d have a seizure and shit out the Bremerton ferry, passengers included.

Would be fun to root for a team that would even consider making bold moves......

Did you see this commentary from my Dad who was 85 yo at the time. He didn't understand that I had online access to the Seattle times when I lived in Boston so he would cut out clippings from the newspaper and Mail them to me. lol

I bet the tigers are kicking themselves right now for not trading him in the off season. If there is any setback with this injury they run the risk of losing him for nothing and even if he comes back before the deadline, They probably cut their return by at least 3/4 of what they would have gotten in the off season.

I think they thought they would be contenders this year, so why not have him anchor the rotation and see where they sit at the deadline.

FWIW, this is exactly the reasoning I am using to justify a Miller trade (the exception being he has 3 years instead of 1 before FA). If those bone spurs chip off, it would be like throwing sand in the pistons. This is essentially the same thing that Skubal just had surgery to fix.

BTW - the Athletic just posted an article on who the top suitors will be for Skubal. With our stellar rotation and 2 hot prospects knocking at the door, we aren't expected to be players.

Top suitors include the Dodgers because, well, of course it would. "Just imagine an October rotation of Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. Yikes!"
