No matter what, we'll have the option to choose from one of the following 6.

S. Torkelson
A. Martin
E. Hancock
A. Lacey
Z. Veen
N. Gonzalez

So that's gotta make you pretty damned happy right there!

Kyle Lewis, Mallex Smith, Jake Fraley, and Haniger could all be used to fetch other pieces for the ball club, with a long term OF commitment to Kelenic, Veen, and Rodriguez. Don't think for a second trader Jerry couldn't flip them for something either. And its not like we don't have a current SS and 2B in Crawford and Long. You also have an experienced 3B in Kyle Seager that you could afford for years.

There's talk coming out of Kansas City that they are both high on Nick Gonzalez and Zac Veen and are trying to decide between the two.

Royals are behind us in the rebuilding process but Mayo says they are still more likely to pick Gonzales over Veen because he can hit the bigs quickly. I think that is being undervalued. Even early stagee rebuilding teams are less likely to want to wait 4-5 years for a high risk HS guy. The established perennial contenders have the luxury of thinking more long term. Hopefully we are there in the next few years.
Hey I can't, and won't get mad for getting Veen as a consolation prize.

As far as Lacey and Hancock go, Emerson at the beginning of the season was a consensus 1-1 hands down top pick. However a few mediocre outings against non elite teams caused his draft stock to slide a bit. He'd still be hands down better than any pitching prospect we have in our farm system and maybe ever. I won't be crying if he slides to us at 6.

Asa Lacey, I've done a piece on him before the season started was a borderline Top 5 pick when the season started, but came out smoking when the season started. The fact that he's a southpaw only adds to the rarity of landing such a rare gem in this year's draft. I doubt he'll make it past #3.

As far as this contest goes, that's awesome! Are they blind bids, and if so when do the final submissions need to be entered?

1. Detroit - Spencer Torkelson
2. Baltimore - Austin Martin
3. Miami - Asa Lacey
4. Kansas City - Nick Gonzalez
5. Toronto - Emerson Hancock
6. Seattle - Zac Veen
No I will start a contest thread in about a week and you can post them there. No need to blind them. Thanks for the refresher on Lacey. He was the one guy that I missed in terms of scouting report....

He has the Blue Jays taking Veen. Man this is going to be fascinating. Who to you think outside of Tork, Martin, Lacey, Hancock, Veen, Nick will be most likely to crack the top 6? Detmers or Meyers or someone else? Thanks again.

Man thats a total crapshoot. Maybe whomever is the most MLB ready. Detmers or Meyer maybe. Bailey will always be my darkhorse candidate however. I think Garrett Mitchell may fall out of the Top 10 or 15.

Yeah, I haven't heard much buzz about Mitchell lately. CBS has both Veen and Gonzales out of the top 6 replaced with the two guys I mentioned.

I'd be curious to see what a list looks like showing players cumulative draft ranking.

Take the best 10 (or whatever) picks that can be found.

Nick Gonzales, for example, if he was ranked at (6,7,7,5,9,4,8,6,7,8) his cumulative average draft rank would be 6.7

That would be my best guess for how the first 10 will actually go down. I don't have time to do it though lol.

Man I wish we could've had a full season. Then we might've gone with my original #1 pick Mick Abel. No we'll never know. Stupid pandemic! Kid has the highest upside of any pitcher in the draft. We need more prospects like that on the farm. Still though, very excited. I hope he doesn't end up in Boston. I've seen Abel being mocked on a lot of boards to Boston lately.

Detmers just being plain filthy. If Gonzalez and Hancock are both off the board, and Seattle doesn't go prep bat with Veen, I could easily see them grabbing Reid Detmers. Dude was just straight filthy this year and some scouts are raving about how high his ceiling actually is. I'm convinced we're gonna get a prospect I really like at 6.

Players I dislike seeing mocked to us at 6
Garrett Mitchell
Jared Kelley
Ed Howard
Cade Cavalli
Garrett Crochet

Sometimes, I think writers that publish guys like these to us at 6 are strictly trying to pump up readers from other teams just below us.
