My theory is that the “opener” strategy takes some pressure off the regular “starter.” If the “opener” gives up runs and the team can’t overcome, the regular starter doesn’t take the loss. OTOH, if I I understand the rules correctly (not likely), if the “opener” gets a lead he can’t get the win so the regular “starter” gets the win if he puts in five innings and doesn’t lose the lead. Is this a way to pad the win total of the regular “starters”?
Ryan Yarbrough was 16-6 last year for the Rays, with just 6 starts, so many of those wins came after the “opener” started.

don't think the Rays are concerned about padding the win totals of starters...think their front office is a little more advanced than that

I don't see much good in having a crappy relief pitcher start off the game. If it was like last year and you have Colome and Diaz then great, but putting in some journeyman to face the opponent's best batters doesn't seem wise.

Shed Long also sucks. He blew just as many opportunities as Seager. Jesus pal... 3-1 count and you swing? Let the guy who is walking everyone throw a ball you clown.
How dare the 23 year old with 50 mlb at bats under his belt make a mistake.
Yep. Lets just keep making excuses for professional baseball players who have 0 ability to think in a situation despite playing the game all their lives.

If I'm Servais, I'm screaming from the dugout "TAKE THIS GOD DAMN PITCH!"
“There’s no joy in T-Mobile Ville cause mighty Shed has popped out!”

And to think they coulda been 12 games Unda.

Now they got a One Way Ticket to Palookaville.

😰😢🤪

no he shouldn't be crappy, generally i think you want a one inning reliever, a guy that is going to go out there and basically give everything he has for that inning...In my mind it would be more about the inning than the batters he faces...then the starter begins the second inning like its the first inning but with the lineup flipped

My continuing to follow this “team,” though less so by the year, is a Testament to the Indomitability of the Human Spirit.

Seager a solid 0-7 today.
He’s got only 3 rbi’s, but he’s Already ahead of Andrew Romine’s totals for all of last year!

Lightyears ahead of the Mariners' front office anyway.

The M's missed the memo about the opener being a good reliever that can make it through the first before giving up 3 runs.
