Did I miss a thread on this topic? How does the dismantling of the scouting department impact future drafts?

1. It looks like we no longer have much presence in the Caribbean/S. America.

2. JD said we will use more video rather than in person scouting.

Thoughts?
Since we opened this state of the art training and educational facility in the DR in 2014, we have a helluva presence in the Caribbean/S. America. Mariners are sending young prospects from all over the Caribbean/S. America to this 24 acre facility carved out of the jungle. Three practice fields, a playing field with the exact dimensions of T-Mobile, dormitories, gyms, classrooms, and cafeteria... Besides, by far, the majority of the best international prospects for the MLB come from this area...Best to become an expert prospector where the majority of the gold is....https://www.mlb.com/news/new-academy-bo ... c-67759028

This is probably the best thing Jack Zduriencik did as GM https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mar ... -republic/
Cool. Thanks.

As of 8/13 we are (picking 3rd) and at 1.5 games back of tie for pick 1, 2 from attaining the #1 pick. On the other end of the spectrum those two games the other way would have us tied for the 14th pick. I think we stay in the top 10 but probably not no.1.

ANd then there is this:
https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2020/08 ... ocker.html

The article states that the agreement has been written:
in March stated, “In the event that each Club plays less than 81 regular season games in 2020, the Office of the Commissioner shall have the right, after conferring in good faith with the MLBPA, to modify the Draft order.”

lookoutlanding.com/2020/7/20/21327522/2021-mlb-draft-preview-kumar-rocker
I don't know that their evaluation on Kumar Rocker is really good or not but it is something.
Good FB sits 95 and has up to 100 but has some location issues but has superior vert and horizontal movement

Slider is a weird verticle vs horizontal movement but he has command and control and is his best pitch currently

He has a more than 1K /inning and only about 2 BB/9

Traditional CB not used much so far
CU again not used much but compd to Steven Strasburg

So vs the presumptive 2019 #1 E Hancock
Scouting Grades/Report (20-80 grading scale)
FASTBALL65
CURVEBALL55
SLIDER60
CHANGEUP60
CONTROL55
OVERALL 55
If I were to convert Kumar Rocker to these scouting grades based on what I have read:
FASTBALL65+ maybe not enough for a 70 outright but maybe
CURVEBALL45 terms like flashes +,, and shape but at present
SLIDER60 (70) command and control and unique movement
CHANGEUP50
CONTROL50
OVERALL 60

The trouble here is present vs future values

If they use this year and last year, that would stink. There are a few teams that just SUCKED last year and having those games weigh as heavily as games this season would be stupid. Tigers could win 20 more games than the Mariners and still pick ahead of them. Orioles could win 12 more, and Marlins could win 10 more.

To go along with the bit about maybe not basing draft picks only on the 60 game or less 2020 season here is last years draft order to play along with:
1 Detroit Tigers

Baltimore Orioles

Miami Marlins

Kansas City Royals

Toronto Blue Jays

6 Seattle Mariners

Pittsburgh Pirates

San Diego Padres

Colorado Rockies

10 Los Angeles Angels

Chicago White Sox

Cincinnati Reds

San Francisco Giants

Texas Rangers

15 Philadelphia Phillies

Chicago Cubs

Boston Red Sox

Arizona Diamondbacks

New York Mets

20 Milwaukee Brewers

St. Louis Cardinals

Washington Nationals

Cleveland Indians

Tampa Bay Rays

25 Atlanta Braves

Oakland Athletics

Minnesota Twins

New York Yankees

Los Angeles Dodgers

So combining the two lists add thetwo and divide for average
Pirates #1 2020, #7 2019 (4)
Boston #2 2020, #17 2019 (9.5)
Seattle #3 2020, #6 2019 (4.5)
LAA #4 2020, #10 2019 (7)
SF # 5 2020, #13 2019 (9)
Phil , #16 2019 (11)
St L , #21 2019 (14)
8 DC, #22 2019 (15),
9 KC, #4 2019 (6.5)
10 Mets, 2019 19 (14.5)
Now the other top few picks from 2019
2019
#1 Det 2020 20 (10.5)
#2 Balt , 2020 23 (12.5)
#3 Miami, 2020 29 (16)
#5 Tor, 2020 11 (8)
#8 SDP,, 2020 17 (12.5)
#9 Rockies , 2020 24 (16.5)

The combined reverse standings have the M's just behind the Pirates but I would think that a tie this year would have the higher pick to the M's by virtue of last year's seeding.

I think we wind up with the 2nd overall pick next June. No way are we playing worse than Pittsburgh. Jack Leiter says "hello."

Leiter would have likely been a late first round pick if he wanted to go to mlb over college. It looks like Vandy is a pitching factory. 10 first round picks in 13 years, and 2 locks for next year?! Here's a scouting report from LL.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.lookou ... ack-leiter

His dad was an MLB pitcher for 19 years. He's got the genitics for it. That's probably part of the reason he didn't sign out of HS and had such a high price tag. He would have had to be a top 15 pick. Apparently e was asking for 4 million signing bonus. Mariners took Gilbert at 14 for 3.8 million.
“My son Jack never wavered,” Leiter said. “He always wanted to go to Vanderbilt. His commitment to Vanderbilt was rock solid. I’m proud how he was so resolute and convicted with his choice and decision-making.”

Dad made $68M as a pitcher and millions more as a broadcaster. I can't fathom why anyone in that position would rather ride buses in the low minors than get a college education, live a dream college life, have your choice of thousands hot Southern sorority girls. NO BRAINER.

Yeah. I'd go to the pitching factory if I was in his position as well. He didn't need to 2 million signing bonus for being drafted at 25.

Next year's draft crop will have a little bit of everything minus power slugging 1B basemen such as Torkelson or Vaughn. You want a left power hitting catcher with good on plate skills, infield depth, pitching depth, you name it, the Top 10 has it. The only consensus at this point is Rocker goes #1.

I have a feeling its going to be a 2 year average. No way Manfred let's this tankathon affect next years draft. That's just my opinion. If that's the case, then we just need to tie Pittsburgh, rather than beat.

PI is going off of this year only. Where are you seeing that 2019 will be included again. I don't see it because it already determined last year's draft. 60 games is enough of a sample. Also it would delegitimize the playoffs this season. They would basically be saying 60 games is enough for to determine playoff teams but not for draft order???? Idiotic.
