There is one thing we should keep in mind as Dipoto cuts $'s from our roster this season.

I remember hearing Dipoto talk about the team's budget and how they are thinking big picture, not one year at a time, but multiple years.

He has saved on Bruce and Encarnacion to the tune of about $10 million

Suppose the mandate was, "This is your rolling budget for the next 3 years, any dollars you save now can be utilized over the next two years."

When we're ready to contend in 2021, I'd be pretty happy if that extra money is available on top of normal budget to make a move and go for it without having to ask for dollars.

Pretty optimistic viewpoint given this teams history, but I think it's a good possibility.

The prospects we got for Bruce and Encarnacion plus an extra $10 mil to spend in 2021 make the return a bit easier to stomach.

This is a good point. The payroll was definitely getting cut and the only way to unload the aged veterans in the off-season was a bad swap. We are now down to Felix,Dee and Corey’s brother. I would keep our current rotation intact as bad as it is to simply eat innings and not ruin any youngsters who should stay in the minors until they force the opportunity. The Dipoto is an idiot crowd are reaching and $10M is significant...bpj, your right over the target with this one

So After 100 trades, in this his 4th year, this GM has No Bullpen and a lousy defense.

Anyone who is still “down” with 2021 is as Delusional as Jerry D.

About this latest fleecing, how many young pitchers has the able GM acquired, how many have been successful?

Remember Leonys Martin? He was to be The Answer in CF. Then, what, after a year or so, Gone. Dyson? Gone.

He trades for say, 3 first basemen in the same year, Valencia, Alonso, et al.

Needs to up his Ritalin.

With this “organization,” nothing succeeds like failure.

The thing about prospects is no one can know how they will turn out, the perpetual bitching about JD's potentially bad moves are as myopic as anyone saying(me included) that his great trades will work out. At least this time we can hold him accountable, he pushed for the rebuild and he has the drafts and trades behind him. If we were still in the purgatory of least season he might have coasted for another 3 seasons.

The one good thing is this trade pisses off Toronto fans something chronic. I hope he hits a grandslam against them just to twist the knife a bit more.
Good point Dr. and I like your prescription.
How is it sticking it to Toronto?

I shouldn’t have sold The first house I ever bought on Newman lake. It’s easily worth 10 times what I paid for it......

At some point in order to keep a positive attitude...you need to let the old mistakes in your life go. I see no..nada..none reason why Leone’s or Valencia or any historical trade,FA or insert name here...has any bearing on this reimagination......It is obvious this FO has made some really inexcusable mistakes throughout our history......To finally realize after 20 yrs that a reset is needed is a giant leap in the right direction in my book

When we traded Santana for EE we added the 77th pick in this years draft
▪ RHP Isaiah Campbell, Arkansas (CBB, 76): With the CBB pick they gained — along with Edwin Encarnacion — from the Indians this season in exchange for Carlos Santana, the Mariners picked up the 21-year-old power pitcher. Campbell posted an 11-1 record and 2.27 ERA in 16 starts with Arkansas this season, and struck out 108 while walking 19 in 103 innings. His fastball can reach the mid-to-upper 90s, and his slider and splitter are his best secondary offerings.

Hunter: “Isaiah Campbell another one with a really good track record in the SEC. More strikeouts than anything, tons of strikes. Another big, physical right-handed pitcher that we really see could be an innings-eater at the next level.”

speaking of Dipoto, here is an interesting article on him and the Smith trade in particular. Its a college student's blog but he goes to Tufts, I have a definite soft spot for Tufts. I think he does a pretty good job, and its not particularly complimentary

Hopefully jd won't spend that extra 10 million on something like nicasio or some other one-hit-wonder reliever. Still can't believe he gave that guy's 17 million for 2 years. By the way he sucks again this year too
