Encarcion to yanks
Re: Encarcion to yanks
I do want to point out I don't hate every deal JD makes.
I hated the:
The Phillies and Mariners have struck a deal that sends shortstop Jean Segura to Philadelphia along with relievers Juan Nicasio and James Pazos. On the other end of the swap, the Seattle organization will receive veteran first baseman Carlos Santana and young infielder J.P. Crawford.
But after researching it I saw Carlos Santana as a really good candidate to bounce back to form and JP Crawford as a pretty good bet to eventually develop. The template of a decent defender SS with good discipline and size just seemed to grow on me especially after getting a prospect piece-wise style.
The Mariners have added slugger Edwin Encarnacion while sending recently acquired first baseman Carlos Santana and will also acquire the Cleveland org’s competitive balance pick in next year’s draft. It’s a Round B choice that currently sits at No. 77 — and that turned into:
RHP Isaiah Campbell, Arkansas (CBB, 76) ranked # 49 in the draft class and has the potential to be a top 100 prospect very soon.
As for EE that 140's OPS+ and proving to be effective at 1st Base in addition to re-capturing his prime slugger form.
I think it was just a missed opportunity to land another top 100ish style prospect.

According to this, the M's (and their cash from TB) are paying all but $3M of Encarnacion's salary. The M's are also paying the $5M option for next year.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... RQ/pubhtml
If that is true and JD is paying for everything except 3 million than he has no respect from the other GMs and he needs to be fired.
I hope to Gawd that is some Yankee homer kid in his basement but if it is true we need an antifa style uprising against the moron.

Roster resource has something a little more palatable:Hanjag wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 6:05 amIce~

It says 1/2 the salary and 1/2 the buy out. That would mean the trade something like 8 million in salary relief. If the Yanks were supposed to be the winning bidders how much salary did Colorado and Houston expect Seattle to pay to add an elite bat at a position of weakness for them?
Color me confused about value.
I don't know how many times I have proposed something like we are competing for the playoffs someone has player X owed big $ is out of it and is short term and not projected to recoup anything from a qualifier etc, etc.
I have been blown up with posters saying we don't have enough to get the EE type player that we needed at the time. I would be proposing something interesting like M's top 30 #9 and our 2nd best BP prospect or some such.

Until we absolutely know for sure what Houston, TB, or Colorado were offering, it's still just speculation, as to "HOW GOOD" each said prospect was. Otherwise it's just hearsay. And IF so, were they that much better to offset $8 million in salary relief. Truth, NONE of us know. But I'd love to to hear Jerry give his take on it in an interview, as to how they form an overall value system for a trade.
If Then is to ranked in our Top 15-20, and COL, TB, HOU, were only offering players that would be ranked 12-15 for us, is that worth $8 million. Again, we don't know who was on the table, so its unfair to form an incorrect assumption of the deal until we have all the known variables.

As the Mariners continue to dump contracts, their future payroll situation becomes more clear. Contractual obligations for the years ahead:
2020 $65.5 million
2021 $41.5 million
2022 $0

I don't see Seager being traded with his contract situation.

Seems like a perfect storm to me. In a good way, imo.

We got very used to seeing guaranteed contracts of well over $100mm a year, seeing $0 was actually a bit of a surprise even though we knew it was coming. Now all we need to worry about is JD actually executing the rebuild.
Ryan Divish just posted the following on Twitter. It's an excel file:
For those interested, this Mariners payroll projection that @Goose1701 has made off one of my rudimentary ideas is beyond useful and continually updated. Also the shedding of payroll -- specifically guaranteed deals -- shouldn't be surprise.

From Drayer to sum it all up:
JUNE 17, 2019 AT 2:09 AM
She was up late
What the Mariners got out of Edwin Encarnación
Dec. 3, 2018: Mariners trade Jean Segura, Juan Nicasio and James Pazos to the Phillies for J.P Crawford and Carlos Santana
• Mariners clear $68,650,000 in salary
• Take on $41,166,666
• Net future savings $27,483,000
Dec. 13, 2018: Mariners trade Santana to Indians for Edwin Encarnación and competitive balance pick in three-way deal with Tampa Bay
• Mariners clear $41,166,666
• Take on $21,666,666 plus $5 million buyout
• Receive $5 million from Tampa
• Send $6 million to Cleveland
• Net $18.5 million
June 17, 2019: Mariners trade Encarnación to Yankees for Juan Then
• Yankees pick up roughly $8 million of remaining salary
In total, Encarnación was part of deals that netted the Mariners their starting shortstop (Crawford), their No. 16 prospect according to MLB Pipeline (Then), the No. 76 overall MLB Draft pick (Isaiah Campbell) and around $54 million in future payroll savings.

Re: Encarcion to yanks
How about this for the next big trade idea. We convince the Marlins to sign each Ichiro to a minor league deal $100. JD pays $99 of it. We then trade Dee Gordon to the Marlins for Ichiro. We pay all but $1 of Gordon salary.
Mariners ownership is happy because they think that we saved a dollar.
The Marlins are happy cuz they got Gordon for only $2
Ichiro's happy cuz he gets to pretend he's a major league baseball player again
The idiot sector of the Mariner fanbase is happy because they get to watch Ichiro again
JD is happy because only cost him $99 out of his own pocket to look like a hero in both the eyes of ownership and the idiot sector of the Mariner fan
Dee Gordon is happy cuz it gets the hell out of Seattle
The rare win win win win win scenario
