Kikuchi contact goes beyond 2021, right? It's a player option for year 4 if Seattle doesn't exercise the 4 year option after year 3.bpj wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:59 pm$0 in future commitments after 2021 and a farm system that has gone from last to at worst middle of the pack are both incredibly bullish scenarios in my opinion, yes.Jack Merridew wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:01 pmWe're obviously on the way up? I don't think that is so obvious. Weren't the Mariners in a similar situation not so long ago with Smoak, Ackley, the Big Three etc in their system about to rejuvinate the roster? How did that turn out?
Add that to the guys who are at worst average players at the MLB level and I see nothing but upside.
Seems about as obvious as can be.

I really don't know what to say here. I mean catch 22 wouldn't be that out of place. I mean there really is no other way but to dump, tank, restock, draft, and then augment your core. Wait. Were you the guy that just felt we could spend enough to bring in FAs and prop up the aging (Felix failed) core.Jack Merridew wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:01 pmWe're obviously on the way up? 1) The minor league system is much better nowJack Merridew wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:01 pmWe're obviously on the way up? I don't think that is so obvious. 2) Our future payroll obligations then were much worse
3) We have a much better core now, look at todays lineup

Haniger/Vogelbach/Santana/Crawford/Gonzalez/Kikuchi isn't much of a core. If they are going to get to the playoffs and go anywhere in the playoffs they will need 2-3 starting pitchers considerably better than anyone they have now and maybe, if they are lucky, one of the guys in their system will pan out at that level any time soon. So basically, you guys are counting on them to sign at least two frontline starters in the next few years at NY/Boston/Chicago market prices. Either that, or the Mariners need to suck for another 4 years and load their system with top 5 draft picks. Kelenic is the closest thing to a shoe-in position prospect, but he ain't no Griffey. And then, there's the issue of building a bullpen, and Dipoto has shown himself to be utterly clueless in assesing relief pitchers.
Re: Encarcion to yanks
Yeah, they need to sign a couple free agents to fill holes.
Big deal. They will have $150M per season in payroll flexibility at that point. Get it?

As long as they can get fools into their ballpark based purely on hope there is little reason to believe they will break the bank overpaying elite free agents.

I think the definitely might have some ptsd from the Cano, Seager and Felix contracts..........Jack Merridew wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2019 3:32 pmAs long as they can get fools into their ballpark based purely on hope there is little reason to believe they will break the bank overpaying elite free agents.

While the Cano deal worked out in terms of WAR vs. salary I am sure they feel lucky as hell to get rid of that contract are like someone that miraculously survives and airplane crash. They will be taking trains and buses for the next few years.

At this point I would love to see Dipoto continue on his current path.
He keeps putting a Haniger, Santana, Vogelbach, Narvaez level player at vacancies and we'll be thanking sweet baby Jesus that Dipoto didnt bother with free agency.
At least for the lineup. I consider Kiluchi spending pretty big, so I'd like to see another couple similar moves for pitching along with the young minor league studs who may never see MLB figure it out.
