I think there is a different explanation: that there were some people who voted against Trump. They like their state republican legislators, but they wanted to get rid of Trump. Trump never campaigned to win "the center" that some of us occupy. Support for my explanation is that Republican Senate candidates in several states: Maine, Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan, just off the top of my head, are doing better than Trump in those states.

Don't be fooled by politicians who put R next to their name. Many of them owe allegiance to the establishment and their donors. They want things to go back to the way they were before this populist uprising.
