There are many problems and he certainly appears to be one of them. Of course the main problems are higher up.
What is he doing wrong?
I think it's more about what he isn't doing behind the scenes to get the most out of his players. In games it's his use of the bullpen mainly, but also his pinch-hit decisions have frequently been head-scratchers IMO. I think he would improve his cachet with the players if he would have their backs once in a while when their is an umpiring dispute.

I think the bullpen is limited by talent. They have 2 elite relievers (Munoz, Brash), 1 that's pretty good (Speier), and 1 that's showing he might be good (Vargas). Everyone else is a giant question mark, with guys like Legumina and Kowar that seem to have some potential, but we just don't know yet.

As for the offense, we can quibble about stuff like pinch hit decisions, but it's mostly about the talent on the roster, especially Julio, who's tracking more to the good player level than the great player the offense needs.

Julio appears to have no pitch recognition. His strategy is to guess what's coming, swing as hard as he can, and hope to make contact.

The problem is, he thinks everything is fine. He truly believes he's a superstar. That's why you always see him running around giggling like a little child. He's brain dead.

In that situation last night with the bases loaded and one out and the M's down 2, who didn't know he was going to strike out? He's the LAST one I want to see at the plate in that situation. Well except for Dylan who has serious contact issues right now.

Julio is honestly one of the dumbest players I've ever seen in all my years watching baseball. He literally makes me cringe at times.

I hate that he's likely to be a Mariner for many years to come. I would rather he was someone else's problem / embarrassment.

A serious organization would make sure Julio understood that he needed to fix his approach and stop relying on his athletic abilities to get by at the plate, and would bench him for periods until the message got through. But heaven forbid the gutless wonder of MLB franchises hurt the feelings of their marketing darling along with all his groupies, since it could damage the fun differential they care so much about. Never mind it would likely result in him becoming a better hitter and the team winning more games down the road.
