As Donn mentioned though it has now been a season and a half of suck. .677 OPS 2nd half last season and God forbid pitchers stop drilling him with historical frequency his OBP probably falls under .300 with Ozzie Smith Power. That is almost 1000 PAs and the recency bias will come into play big time.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:27 pmEh, I disagree.bpj wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:15 pmTy is a utility player at best imo.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 3:44 pm
What do we do about France?
We have seen the potential he has with the bat, but everything has dropped off this season. He's not exactly a liability, but he's also been dropped down in the batting order, he hits into double plays like crazy, and he's one of the worst clutch hitters on the team. (note: I have no stats to back any of that shit up - it's just the impression I've gotten the last few months).
So - trade him? Keep him? Order us a new legit 1B off Amazon and put Ty as full time DH?
And if he isn't versatile enough to do that, then he's nothing.
He doesn't have the power for either 1B or DH.
If he can't beat out Moore or Haggerty or Caballero for a utility spot, then he's no good to us imo.
I'm by no means a France lover and want the M's to replace him.
But there's plenty of room for a .280/.350/.440 1B w. 20 homer pop around the league which is what France has been aside from a bad '23.
^ These numbers basically make him a mid-tier 1B and he plays solid D.
I think we are good at 2B for 2024

Cody Bellinger was one of the worst players in baseball in ‘21, ‘22 and now he’s someone on your radar…

Sure, there's room for Ty at 1B around the league. He'd make a good first baseman on a rebuilding team that isn't trying to win now, but that's about it.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:27 pmEh, I disagree.bpj wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:15 pmTy is a utility player at best imo.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 3:44 pm

If we had more open positions we could maybe get away with not having a middle of the order bat at 1B, but we don't.
We only have 1B, DH and a corner outfield position, and they're not likely to add a top corner outfielder for $200M.
We desperately need the Pete Alonso type in the middle of our order.
Ty is in the way of that.
They pigeonholed Ty as our first baseman which already took us out of the market for Freddie Freeman and Matt Olson. That's proven to be a mistake.
The Astros are the only playoff team with a worse 1B than Ty France. But they already have their MOTO hitters at other positions.

One difference though with Bellinger is you are rolling the dice on MVP level elite talent vs. a 3 WAR France. I supposed Bellinger's OPS crater into the 500s vs. France's .700 too so totally different risk/reward profile.

But he went to a rebuild team to recreate his value. So touchéD-train wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:56 pmTouche!Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:42 pmWe’ll see I guess.D-train wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 4:35 pm

There aren't many players that peak after 30.

To be a winner we cannot continue with the power outage that is 1B and 3B imho.
I can live with Geno for another year.
Trade Ty France please!

Re: I think we are good at 2B for 2024
I've said it before and I will say it again - go ALL IN on Matt Chapman. Yes, he's a smidge over 30, but he is still the best overall defensive 3B in the game, and he's pretty solid offensively. He has more than double the WAR of Geno.seattlefan-daBronx wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:13 pmTo be a winner we cannot continue with the power outage that is 1B and 3B imho.

I don't know what to do with Geno - maybe he becomes INF UTIL and/or DH...maybe he can be traded (though unlikely with his contract). But I would love to see Chapman at the hot corner at T-Mobile.
And yes, D-Train, I know we are stuck with Geno. But a guy can dream, can't he?

Could non-tender him in all actuality.
To me, a trade for Pete Alonso makes too much sense. Could include France in a possible trade.
I am sure Mets fans will be jacked to get a 1B with an OPS 50 points lower than Vogey. lol
It would be a rebound trade. Trade a 1B who surely isn't re-singing for a 1B w. multiple years of control who could return to some of his norms. Obviously the M's would have to include a bit more in the trade... but I'd rather do that than trade off Woo or Miller for him.
Perhaps France, Hancock + a couple young prospects gets it done.
