Every signing and every trade carries risks.D-train wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 8:42 pmSure lets sign and trade for a bunch of guys that need fixing. They will be really cheap saving Stanton even more money and if it doesn't work we can just try again in 2025.bpj wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 7:56 pmLooks like 4.43 ERA for Giolito compared to a 4.68 ERA for Silva for their careers.
Giolito has about the same career ERA (4.43) as Justin Dunn (4.44) currently has.
Woo has a 4.21.
Miller has a 4.32.
I'm not sure there's much upside in Giolito as a 30yo, but maybe there's something with him they can fix.

One could argue that an acquiring team would need to fix likely Cy Young winner Blake Snell, who this season led the National League in walks while averaging less than six innings a start despite an average of 99 pitches per start.
Some folks like to buy high and sell low.
Others don't.

I have found the phrase "you get what you pay for" to be pretty rock solid over the years.harmony wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 9:29 pmEvery signing and every trade carries risks.D-train wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 8:42 pmSure lets sign and trade for a bunch of guys that need fixing. I like players that perform regardless of the cost. Mike Ford for minimum wage is my buy low candidate....

Yep, I like where Blake Snell is on the list of 2021-2023 pitchers.D-train wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 9:36 pmI have found the phrase "you get what you pay for" to be pretty rock solid over the years.harmony wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2023 9:29 pmEvery signing and every trade carries risks.

He's ranked 19th in MLB above some pretty good names. And there may be a little room for improvement. Seems like a decent guy to gamble on if there's actually a hometown discount on the table, finally.
Sonny Gray is right there with him, but Gray is also 3 years older.
Gray may be a decent depth gamble with upside though.

Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League thread!
Both would be good but I like the 25 yo with the 1.16 ERA and 2 HRs allowed in 171 innings for lower cost. There goes D train focusing on value again. lol

Re: Finally! Official Hot Stove League thread!
That guy is the biggest sure thing to ever come out of Japan and that includes Ichiro....
He could triple his ERA and still be a number 2 starter.

Just two years ago the Mariners gave a reigning Cy Young winner a nine-figure contract.

I didn't realize Aaron Nola was the same age as most of these guys.
He may be worth a look despite the down year.
