There is a video out there from a guy recording the shooter on the roof.

Wild to me they let him get off that roof... let alone didn't spot him before the shot.

I'd be surprised if it was a "pro". First of all, the choice of weapon, a bolt-action rifle wouldn't be the ideal weapon of choice for a sniper. Secondly, whether he was aiming for Kirk's head or heart, the shooter missed by more than six inches and was just lucky he hit an artery. A professional sniper doesn't miss that badly from that distance.

The weapon recovered is a Mauser .30-06, which is extremely usable as a sniper rifle.

I'm not a gun guy, but a .30-06 would more be associated with some farm boy or a game hunter to me than it would a trained sniper who brought an automatic weapon with all the bells and whistles. Also, I haven't watched the grim video by choice, but would this appear to be a normal round or some kind of fragmentation bullet?

I guess my question is, if you were hell-bent on an assassination from 200 yards with light security and had the means to use any long-range rifle, would a bolt-action .30-06 be a go-to choice, or would you use an automatic souped-up modern tech type rifle? I'm reading that a .30-06 is deadly from 600 yards.

Actual military sniper rifles are bolt action rifles. The standard sniper rifle right now, for the Marine Corps, is a bolt action .308. I believe it used to be .30-06 but for some reason they've moved to the .308. I have no idea what the tradeoff is there but for our purposes these are pretty similar.

200 meters isn't a close range shot. Your weapon of choice at that range would favor accuracy above all else and if the shooter knows what he's doing, he's only concerned about getting off the one shot, so a bolt action rifle is just fine for that. Also, there are millions of these rifles and given that this is an older model Mauser, it wouldn't surprise me if it's completely untraceable. He could have bought it at a gun show from some old guy that got it from someone else 30 years ago.

I don't know what kind of round he would have used but I assume the main consideration was accuracy. 200 meters isn't a terribly difficult shot for someone that knows what they're doing, but it isn't a chip shot either. That he shot the victim in the neck suggests to me that he slightly overestimated his elevation, maybe because he was shooting from the roof. I've read that shooting at a down angle like that is tricky.

I'm surprised they caught him so quickly. It seemed like this was pretty well planned and executed, including his escape route. His face was partially caught on camera, but he had a ball cap and sunglasses on, which would make facial identification in court extremely difficult.

But I suppose he couldn't resist telling someone about it.

My initial take is the same as with Luigi Mangione: that this is very likely a psychopath that wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone and whatever political motivation he espouses is ultimately just an excuse.

Makes sense, when I shot from 200 yards in the Corps with an M-16 I was pretty deadly but from ground level. I was surprised at the gun he used because before I posted I looked up the sniper rifles that guys like Chris Kyle used.

I agree with GI Storm on this, I don't think his "political affiliation" means anything as he's obviously disturbed to the point where he did something that very, very few of us would ever even think of doing, including those who vote for the same people he votes for (if he ever voted). People constantly make the mistake of trying WAY too hard to rationalize the irrational as though Tyler Robinson is just like us, and he isn't. He represents scrungy little pieces of shit and nothing else.
