Mariners finalizing 5 year contract with Josh Naylor

Running it back is fine I guess, but it doesn't move the needle for me.

I have gone back and forth all day. I loved the way Josh played down the stretch. But it appears they are paying for the post trade Nails, vs his career norms.


Posy trade he was a .299 .341 .490 .831 138 OPS+ guy on a 27 HR and 57/57 SB pace. He was a 6 WAR pace guy post trade.

If it is in fact $90M He only needs to put up a little over 11 WAR in 5 seasons to make it worth. 2.2 WAR per season. I think he can do it now that he knows he can steal 30 bags off all the dumb pitchers.

They might end up with a bad year or two at the end, but Yandy Diaz will be a year older (34) in 2026 than Naylor will be by the end of a 5 year contract. (29-33 years old).

They just filled a position with a guy that was top 10 in MLB at his position. Seems like a win.

Its the cost of doing business, that's a baseline contract for fielding a team these days

The length of the contract is irrelevant. All that matters is the WAR he generates. If he puts up 10 WAR over the next three years the contract is paid for, forget the last two years.

That's the thing though. Until the last 2 Months he never put up that level of War in his entire career.

2023 2.3 WAR in 121 games

It seems highly unlikely that some light switch just turned on at age 28 and that we are going to see him put up 10 WAR over the next 3 seasons when prior to getting to Seattle he was never even remotely close to that level of production.

No it is a $17.2/season deal. He gets $6.5 as a signing bonus which comes now.

I'm saying he's going to do it, I'm saying its the WAR that matters not the years. How much WAR have you paid for with your $100 MIL.

My guess is that this deal is easily the best that Naylor could do on the market. I don't think any other team was coming close to this.

May be but we weren’t signing Alonso and he was the best of the rest along with we really need a 1B. Fair deal I believe
