Where Jeff Passan and I completely disagree. I do not believe that Mather feels this way. However the fact that he said it paints a very dark gray/blackish line that Mather tiptoed over. There are consequences for every action.

1. Seager may be overpaid, but in this year in the rebuild he is a big factor for us. We will need a motivated Seager to make any kind of run for the playoffs. By writing him off and calling him overpaid, you just totally offended the guy.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 8:29 pmLiterally means word for word and not changed to express the bias inherent in loose interpretation. So let's go through them one at a time.Hasslecracked wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 4:02 pmWhere is the overreaction? That's literally some of the things he said
That was a stupid comment because of what Seager has meant to the organization, but did anyone think they were going to try to re-sign him, including Seager himself? And he said "probably overpaid".Hasslecracked wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 1:58 pm*Called the longest tenured player "overpaid". This player is going to be a major part of this year if motivated and now his wife is thinking about selling their house. How long til Seager requests a trade now?
You are just making things up there. Did you watch the video? Did he appear mad? He didn't even say what the numbers were but you can somehow conclude it was an insulting offer? I think his way of speaking, if isolated, gives the impression of contempt for Kelenic for not signing the offer but when you watch all of the video it's just the way he talks, there is an aloofness about it that rubs people the wrong way.Hasslecracked wrote: *Was mad with Kelenic because he wouldn't sign for an insulting offer. Our #1 prospect and a guy considered the future, and he went out of his way to say they won't play him early now cause he wouldn't sign for peanuts on the dollar.
Could you find the quote on that because i don't recall him specifically saying that. He said there was no way they were going to put any of the young prospects on the 40 man roster because they "didn't want to start their service time clocks for various reasons". I think it's not a stretch to assume that one of the main reasons was that they didn't think those players were ready yet. And I don't recall anyone clamoring for Kelenic or Gilbert to get playing time last year, but perhaps i am wrong.Hasslecracked wrote: *Said he wouldn't play our top pitching prospect to save time on his current deal. Even if other teams do this, they don't discuss it out in public.
He said "his English is not tremendous... but he and Kelenic are very good friends". Was it a cheap shot? Perhaps, but why would he just say that out of the blue without reference to something? It could just be that it's unusual for a foreign prospect to be buddies with one from the U.S. due to the language barrier, and that's why he tossed that remark in there. And while Julio's english may be good now, it may not have been when they first met.Hasslecracked wrote: *Said our 2nd best prospect has bad English, when in fact he already speaks better then Edgar Martinez at only 20 years old. JRod even mentioned on Twitter this made him mad and now other teams are thinking they can acquire him for cheap.
Again, where do you get that he was mad? It sounded like a business decision and part of the negotiations within the hiring process. Iwakuma accepted the terms so i doubt he took it personally. It's certainly possible they don't care about him, but i would need more evidence than that. Besides, won't there be an intepreter on hand already for the Japanese pitcher currently playing for the team?Hasslecracked wrote: *Was mad about paying Kumas interpretor 75k. Why would Iwakuma want to even coach here anymore when it's clear ownership doesn't care about him?
He said their position, in view of the $2.9 bil loss that MLB took last year, was that there were around 180 free agents out there as of Feb 5 and that sooner or later they would come with hat in hand looking for a contract, and that "we think Walker is one of them". He then goes on to reveal they were in talks with Paxton for substantially less than what his agent had demanded. Maybe there's another part that you're referring to, but that excerpt just reveals the nature of doing business where it involves attempting to sign players to the lowest amount possible. They're not running a charity.Hasslecracked wrote: *Made a backhanded compliment to Paxton about how he came here with hat in hand cause other teams wouldnt meet his demands. Said Taijuan wouldn't sign for 3 years either when he just did.
... and that they arranged for a police escort. That one didn't make a whole lot of sense.Hasslecracked wrote: *Says no way employees can park in the parking garage cause they need to charge $40 a spot, but then said it's unsafe for his employees to walk 5 blocks.
He just said the Mariners parade would be much bigger. I would seriously doubt that if the ownership group was paying for it. So yeah, stupid comment.Hasslecracked wrote: *Made fun of the Seahawks Super Bowl parade which was just not necessary. The Seahawks are 100% a better organization then the Mariners.
Need a quote for that one because i don't recall that.Hasslecracked wrote: *Talked really poorly about Latin America prospects. Why would any future talent want to sign here?
2. He was very condensing and appeared annoyed that Kelenic declined their offer. He even said White was a good boy for accepting the low offer after this. Seemed like he was taking a cheap shot for Kelenic not taking the deal.
3. Said "There was no way we were going to move our prospects to the big leagues off our taxi squad to preserve service time" and also said "We won't see Gilbert til mid April to preserve his time". Pretty obvious he's talking about Gilbert.
4. When talking glowingly about a prospect, what does his English have to do with anything? It was an unneeded comment that quite frankly offended the player himself.
5. He said 'Kuma instantly talked better English when we said we couldn't afford an interpretor'. Again, whats the point of saying this about a long time loyal man of our organization.
6. Comparing free agents to homeless beggars looking for loose change isn't gonna entice anyone to sign here for cheap or at all. It was a backhanded compliment all the way around.
7. Regarding the Latin players, he said 'They play as 15 and 16 year olds in our facilities with no hot water and rock filled stadiums" 1st off, why does a billion dollar team have such shit facilities? He proceeds with "We put them in the Hamptons and give them $30, they don't know what to do with themselves" Very degrading saying that about poor Latin players

"Players will be coming to us hat in hand"
=
"Players may fall to us"
Systemic I tell ya!
Ownership, GM, Manager need to go!

I'm guessing there won't be a Bellevue Rotary Luncheon with a Mariners representative next year...

She got it from Bambi’s friend flower. My grandmother used to say, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing at all.

Maybe so, but I remember watching it on Aesop's fables with Sherman and Peabody back in the day. Jesus I'm old.

John Stanton just issued a statement. Mather has resigned
